G D Delprat Distinguished Lecture

The 2017 Distinguished Lecturer was Robert Dunne MAusIMM, the presentation titled Water-facts, perceptions and conflicts was presented to several branches and can be viewed here.

Robert was the Fellow Metallurgy at Newmont Mining Corporation before he retired at the end of 2013, prior to this he held the position of Group Executive-Metallurgy Development and Technology. Over the last 35 years Robert has worked for a number of mining companies including Newcrest Mining, Anglo American, Anglovaal and Mintek. He has authored and co-authored over 80 papers and has been an invited conference plenary speaker. Water in the mining industry has been a focus over the last 10 years and Robert has given three plenary talks on this subject. He was nominated as a SME Henry Krumb lecturer and delivered a plenary talk on water to local USA branches of the SME. He is an Adjunct Professor at both Curtin University (Gold Technology Group) and Queensland University (JKMRC).

AusIMM members with an interest in metallurgical issues can join the Society by ticking the ‘Metallurgical Society’ in the Joining a Community section of the Members’ Area (click here to login to your profile). Members of the Society are eligible to vote in committee elections, and will receive the Society newsletter and occasional emails relevant to the group.

Education and Career Initiatives

The Society provides guidance on scholarships and grants available to student wishing to undertake studies and research in metallurgy. The Society also provides input into a diverse range of career materials including:

  • career profiles for extractive metallurgists, hydrometallurgists, pyrometallurgists, minerals processing engineers, chemical engineers, etc
  • Graduate Program Guidelines for metallurgists.


The Society works closely with AusIMM Publications to ensure quality technical publications relating to the profession of metallurgy are made available. For more information on publications visit the AusIMM Shop.

As a member of the Editorial Committee the Society strives to ensure topics of technical interest for members are incorporated in Transaction C including reviewing papers and advising on best papers for awards. Visit Transactions C here.
